Hearing Exam | Detroit | MichiganDo I have a hearing problem?

Hearing loss is more common then you might think. In North America, 10% of the population, 30 million people, have some type of hearing loss. Many adults do not realize how much hearing they have lost.

Most hearing losses occur gradually, so the signs of hearing loss are difficult to notice. Often family members and friends are the first people to notice a problem.

Signs of Hearing Difficulty:

  • Family complains the TV or radio is too loud
  • People seem to mumble when you speak
  • You can hear people speaking but can't quite understand what they are saying
  • You ask people to repeat what they say
  • You have a hard time understanding conversation in a group or party
  • You have ringing in your ears
  • It is difficult to hear on the phone

Types of Hearing Loss

During your visit you will receive a thorough head and neck examination by a Board-Certified Ear Nose and Throat Physician. A complete audiogram, or hearing test, will also be performed.

Some types of hearing loss can be treated medically. Other types require hearing aids.

Why should I treat hearing loss?

A study done in 1999 by the National Council on Aging documented the affects of untreated hearing loss. Those adults whose hearing loss went untreated reported sadness, depression, worry, anxiety. They were less active socially and felt insecure.

Adults who have treated their hearing loss report better relationships with family, better self esteem, improved mental health and greater independence and freedom.

Choosing a Hearing Aid

Hearing Aids | Detroit | Michigan Hearing losses are very individual and can vary from person to person. Most hearing losses can be helped with hearing aids. The audiologist will help in the selection of hearing aids that are most suitable for you.

There are two major types of hearing aids: behind-the-ear and in-the-ear.

Behind-the-ear (BTE) instruments fit discreetly behind your ear. They transmit sound through a small plastic earmold that fits inside your ear canal.

In-the-Ear (ITE) instruments range in size from a full-shell model which fills the entire bowl of the ear, down to completely-in-the-canal (CIC) model, which fits entirely in your ear canal.

Listening Strategies

Although hearing aids have become very advanced they cannot restore hearing to normal. Today's instruments are more flexible and have better sound quality, but they cannot repair a damaged hearing nerve or revive a person's ability to interpret what they hear.
